At 9:04 a.m., you finally sit down to work on something that requires real thinking.

At 9:06, your phone lights up.

You glance at the notification. Four seconds.

You return to your document.

But somehow, you're no longer there.

You reread the last paragraph. Check another tab. Open email. Remember the notification. Then, eventually, you find your way back into the problem.

The interruption lasted seconds.

The mental disruption can last much longer.

Research from psychologists and cognitive scientists suggests that what we casually call "multitasking" is often rapid task switching and switching carries measurable costs in time, attention, stress, and accuracy.

And there's another uncomfortable possibility:

The biggest threat to deep work may not always be the notification you receive. It may be the habit of checking for one.

The Hidden Cost of an Interruption

Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, has spent years studying how people actually use their attention in real working environments.

Her research has found that people switch between screens and activities remarkably often.

In early research conducted around 2004, people spent roughly 2½ minutes on a screen before switching. More recent measurements from her research have put the average around 47 seconds. Mark has also emphasized that this is a measure of time spent on a screen before switching, not a universal measurement of the human brain's attention span.

That distinction matters.

The number doesn't mean humans can only concentrate for 47 seconds.

It means that in the digital environments being studied, screen-based attention is frequently interrupted or redirected within about a minute.

And once you repeatedly train yourself to switch, staying with one difficult problem can become harder.

The Brain Doesn't Really "Multitask"

We like to think we're multitasking.

Writing an email while listening to a meeting.

Checking Slack while preparing a presentation.

Reading a report while responding to messages.

But cognitive research paints a different picture.

For demanding tasks, the brain generally isn't running two independent thought streams in parallel. Instead, it is rapidly switching between them.

And every switch carries a cost.

The American Psychological Association summarizes decades of research showing that task switching can slow performance and increase errors. Even when the individual switches feel almost instantaneous, repeated switching can accumulate into meaningful productivity losses.

Think of it like a single lane railway.

You can send trains toward different destinations but you can't have the same track fully dedicated to two trains at the exact same moment.

Every change of direction requires coordination.

Your attention works similarly.

But What About People Who Really Can Multitask?

Here's where the science gets interesting.

Researchers Jason Watson and David Strayer studied 200 participants using a driving simulator combined with a demanding memory task.

Most participants performed worse when they had to handle both tasks simultaneously.

But 2.5% showed no measurable performance decline between single-task and dual-task conditions.

The researchers called these rare participants "supertaskers."

So the statement "nobody can multitask" is too absolute.

Some people appear to be unusually good at it.

But they're the exception, not evidence that constant task switching is harmless for everyone else.

The Attention You Leave Behind

There's another phenomenon that may explain why you can return to the correct document and still struggle to think clearly.

Psychologist Sophie Leroy called it attention residue.

In a 2009 study, Leroy found that when people switch from an unfinished task to another task, part of their attention can remain stuck on the original task.

The unfinished problem keeps occupying mental space.

That's particularly relevant to modern work.

You don't finish the email.

You don't finish the presentation.

You don't finish the thought.

You simply switch.

Then switch again.

And again.

The result can be a day filled with activity but surprisingly little uninterrupted thinking.

Your Working Memory Has a Narrow Gate

There's a deeper reason all this matters.

Working memory—the mental system that temporarily holds and manipulates information is limited.

A review describes working memory capacity as constrained, although it can be influenced by training and other factors.

That means complex thinking requires you to keep a limited number of pieces of information active at once.

Imagine trying to solve a complicated puzzle while someone repeatedly removes pieces from the table.

You can continue.

But you keep having to reconstruct what you were doing.

Deep work depends on keeping the pieces together long enough to see the pattern.

And Our Phones Keep Asking for a Piece

The environment around us isn't neutral.

A 2023 Common Sense Media study that analyzed smartphone data from young people found that the median participant received 237 notifications per day. The report also found that many young people were actively developing strategies to reduce unnecessary interruptions.

That's not simply a story about teenagers.

It's a useful illustration of the modern attention environment.

Notifications create repeated opportunities to switch.

And sometimes the notification doesn't even need to arrive.

The possibility of a message can be enough to make you check.

That's why the distinction between external interruption and self-interruption matters.

Sometimes nobody distracted you.

You went looking for distraction.

So What Actually Helps?

The evidence doesn't suggest that the answer is heroic willpower.

It suggests reducing the number of times you have to exercise it.

In a 2015 experimental study, Kostadin Kushlev and Elizabeth Dunn asked adults to limit email checking to three times a day during one week and compare that with a week of unrestricted checking.

Participants reported lower daily stress when they checked email less frequently.

That's a useful clue.

Instead of asking:

"Can I resist the notification?"

Ask:

"Why am I allowing the notification to interrupt me in the first place?"

Try:

  • Batching email and messages into defined windows.
  • Turning off non-essential notifications rather than merely ignoring them.
  • Putting your phone physically out of reach during demanding work.
  • Closing distracting tabs before starting a deep-work block.
  • Finishing or clearly parking a task before switching to another.
  • Creating a visible focus signal so colleagues know when you're unavailable.

These aren't productivity tricks in isolation.

They're ways of changing the environment around your attention.

Knowlegic Perspective

We often treat concentration as a personality trait.

Some people are "disciplined."

Others are "easily distracted."

The research suggests a more useful way to think about it.

Attention is a limited resource operating inside an environment full of competing demands.

Every interruption asks your brain to reorient.

Every unfinished task can leave some attention behind.

Every notification creates another opportunity to switch.

And every repeated switch makes the fragmented-work pattern a little more familiar.

That means protecting deep work isn't necessarily about becoming a more disciplined person.

It can be about designing a less distracting environment.

The phone in another room.

The notifications off.

The email window closed.

The unfinished task properly parked.

Sometimes the smartest way to protect your attention is simply to stop asking your brain to defend it every thirty seconds.

The problem with notifications isn't that each one steals hours.

It's that they repeatedly break the continuity that difficult thinking requires.

A message may take four seconds.

A glance may take two.

But reconstructing the context of a complicated problem can take considerably longer and the research on interruptions, task switching, and attention residue shows why.

So perhaps deep work isn't about forcing yourself to concentrate harder.

It's about giving concentration fewer reasons to disappear.

Your attention is finite.

Treat it like something worth protecting.
